The establishment of the Department of History and Political Science in 1967 was done so with the lofty goal of shaping “a better posterity, a better tomorrow.” The department provides a BA degree in history together with complementary courses in economics and the Indian constitution and politics. The Department also offers an open course in historical tourism to students from other departments. The majority of the college’s students are either entirely or partially enrolled in the history and political science departments. For a seamless learning experience, the Department uses ICT, group discussions, audio-visual aids, peer teaching assignments, seminar presentations, etc. The faculty regularly conducts research activities and participates in regional and national conferences and seminars as a part of faculty development.
The department routinely hosts lectures, seminars, day celebrations, and exhibitions. Students’ attitudes toward historical research have been improved by departmental site visits and study excursions. Both staff members and students who share a strong sense of patriotism dedicate a large portion of their time to serving as NSS volunteers, NCC cadets, and child line volunteers. Every year, the department institutes an award to recognize the college’s most socially responsible student. With remarkable foresight, the department also oversees the tourism and archaeology clubs along with Women’s Cell.
Some of our former students are International sports stars, faculty members in various colleges, and many others who have made important contributions to the academic and public life of Kerala. Presently, the undergraduate department of History and Political Science consist of 4 faculties and around 200 students. The Department regularly hosts Certificate Courses some of which are Museology, Basics of Computer, Career Guidance, Archaeological Tourism etc. which invokes great enthusiasm in the students towards History and allied disciplines.
