ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Languages, established in 1964, plays an important role in the academic and cultural life of the institution. The department offers Malayalam, Hindi, and Sanskrit as common courses (Part II – Second Language) in undergraduate programmes. The department has a dedicated team of faculty members in Malayalam, Hindi, and Sanskrit who support students in developing their language proficiency, literary appreciation, communication skills, and cultural awareness.the Department of Languages continues to foster a vibrant literary environment and contributes to the holistic development of students while nurturing an appreciation of language, literature, culture, and creative expression.

With the implementation of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in 2024 by the University, the structure of language education at the undergraduate level has been further expanded. As part of the FYUGP, common courses have been incorporated into the curriculum in their expanded forms as Ability Enhancement Courses (AECs), Multidisciplinary Courses (MDCs), and Value-Added Courses (VACs).

Under FYUGP, common courses are prescribed for students of B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com. programmes in the first and second years. In addition, Malayalam and Hindi are offered as Minor and Multidisciplinary Course (MDC) options under the FYUGP framework.

The department actively promotes literary, cultural, and creative activities among students. The department organizes programmes such as Kerala Piravi Day celebrations, literary talks, seminars, competitions, and interactions with eminent personalities. Students are encouraged to prepare wall magazines and manuscript magazines under the guidance of faculty members and to participate in literary and cultural activities at the college and collegiate levels. Their creative and literary works are also published in the college magazine. Through these academic and co-curricular initiatives, the Department of Languages strives to nurture linguistic skills, literary creativity, cultural awareness, and the overall personality development of students. The " Arnos Pathiri Chair" functions under the Department of Languages with the aim of promoting and strengthening language learning. Through initiatives such as ‘Jnanavarshini’ and ‘ Aksharamadhuram ,’ study materials are provided to economically disadvantaged students in nearby government schools. The ‘ Santhwanam’ project extends assistance and support to those in need.
