Department of Physics started in the year 1967 with the inception of the undergraduate course BSc Physics. Right from the beginning, the department has always had a team of dedicated faculty who share a common vision – empowering girls by imparting scientific knowledge and enhancing their self-confidence to confront the challenges of the modern world. In 1999, the Department of Physics expanded into a Postgraduate Department, and in 2019, it evolved into a Research Centre under the University of Calicut. Currently, the department comprises of six dedicated permanent faculty members, all of whom hold doctoral degrees.
The department has well-equipped undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories, a department library, and internet facilities to facilitate a conducive learning environment. Noteworthy achievements include the successful organisation of an International Conference on Emerging Trends in Sustainable Energy (ICETSE-2023) and a National Seminar on Advancements in Material Science. Faculty members actively engage in research activities, participate in workshops and seminars at regional and national levels, and contribute to faculty development. The department also offers a certificate course on Technical Writing with LaTeX and another on Skill Development. It runs ‘My Home – My Service,’ a hands-on training program for the students aimed at imparting technical skills for the repair and maintenance of household devices, fostering self-reliability, and immense satisfaction through skill development.
This research department is equipped with a DST-FIST funded research lab. A major project, sponsored by BRNS -Department of Atomic Energy, with a budget of 25 lakhs, was successfully completed within the department. Seven minor projects, sponsored by various agencies like UGC and KSCSTE, and science popularization programs, including World Space Week, have consistently added momentum and vigor to the department’s progress.
