The Department of Physics was established in 1967 with the launch of the BSc Physics program. Over the years, it grew into a Postgraduate Department in 1999 and became a Research Centre under the University of Calicut in 2019. With six permanent faculty members (all with doctoral degree) and 2 guest faculty, the department focuses on empowering girls through science education.
With well-equipped UG and PG labs, a library, and internet access, the department offers a great learning space. It has hosted events like the ICETSE-2023, an International Conference and a National Seminar on Material science. Certificate course in LaTeX and a skill development program, ‘My Home – My Service’, offer practical training in everyday maintenance tasks like gas stove, AC, and water pump repair.
The research wing includes a DST-FIST funded laboratory and has successfully completed a major BRNS-DAE project worth ₹25 lakhs. It has also undertaken several UGC and KSCSTE-funded projects, and regularly organizes programs such as the World Space Week Exhibition. The Association of Physics Students is actively involved in organizing exhibitions, science-based competitions, and various outreach programs aimed at spreading scientific awareness and inspiring young minds. Students of the department also play a key role in coordinating the dynamic activities of the Energy Club and Space Club, igniting a passion for sustainable technologies and space science.
Teaching methods include ICT tools, invited talks, group discussions, game-based learning and seminar presentations. The department encourages students to get involved in all curricular and extracurricular activities. With a strong track record of university ranks, it continues to be a hub for quality education, research, and student growth.
