ABOUT DEPARTMENT

B.Sc Biotechnology in Mercy College was started in 2001 with the support of UGC under the National Policy of vocationalisation of education at first degree level as B. Sc Zoology as the coordinating department with the total outlay of Rs. 17 lakhs for 5 years with the intake capacity of 30 students per year. Biotechnology degree programme was sanctioned by UGC under the Department of Zoology with Chemistry and Zoology as subsidiary subjects for five years. Dr. Jayasree S of the Dept of Zoology took the initiative to set up a full-fledged Biotechnology laboratory in the college with the moral support of the then Principal Sr. Leena Jose. She is the founder Coordinator of the Department and served as its Head for 5 consecutive years. The course is currently permanently affiliated with University of Calicut with environmental technology as subsidiary instead of Zoology and Dr. Jayasree continued as the Course Coordinator until her retirement in 2023. The department offers B.Sc. programme in Biotechnology. The Department strives to achieve excellence in academics by providing quality education to students and encourage them to reach the height of success. The department has young, enthusiastic and well qualified faculty members actively involved in research and teaching activities. Apart from the curriculum, undergraduate students are given opportunity to take part in various certificate courses offered by the department. The department always provides support to carry out their internships in reputed research labs, which help them to face the real challenges in industry and research field. The Department has purchased sufficient number of books for setting up a departmental library to serve the immediate needs of students. The department ensures a student-centric learning environment by adopting teaching techniques like ICT oriented classes. Intradepartmental activities like Research club, wall magazine is also a part of our regular activities. The laboratories, classrooms and staff rooms are well integrated and provide better interactions among staff & students. Besides pursuing their regular academic activities, students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities and co-curricular activities like seminars and workshops. Apart from the curriculum, undergraduate students are given opportunity to take part in various certificate courses offered by the department. The Department also focuses on inculcating ethical and moral values in the students. Public effectively utilises the benefit of the department through various extension and consultancy activities offered by the department. These activities also enhance the social responsibility and creativity of the students.
