Social Entrepreneurship Swachhta and Rural Engagement Cell is part of a Government of India Program. This cell was created for promoting Social Entrepreneurship, Swachhta and Rural Engagement related Workshops, activities, ranking and Certification. The cell is administered by Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education in the Ministry of Education in Government of India. All members are Recognised Institutions are Certified accordingly.
Mercy College, Palakkad has an active Social Entrepreneurship Swachhtha and Rural Engagement Cell. It is under Mahatma Gandhi National Council for Rural education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. The cell plans and works on several areas of sanitation and hygiene, water management, waste management, energy management and Greenary. The cell conducted two International seminars. One on Women Entrepreneurship day and another on World youth day to create an awareness among today’s youth about leadership. The faculty in charge and the SESREC student members came out with several innovative activities during 2020 – 2021inspite of it being a year Covid-19 crises. The surroundings, Classrooms, mess hall and premises were sanitised, rain water harvesting was arranged, posters on water conservation and not wasting water was stuck above all water taps, awareness talks on energy conservation was given and energy saving measures were implemented. Students were trained on waste management and they recycled waste products to make coconut shell plant holders, bottle vases and many other products. They were taught stitching and they stitched masks and sold them in an earn while you learn method. The college also produced organic vegetables. The SESREC Students keep the gardens clean and tidy and maintain the greenary in the campus. They also involve in giving counseling on sanitation and hygiene and waste, water and energy management to save the environment. Mercy College proudly bagged the ‘ One District One Green Champion’ Award at the national level competition conducted by MGNCRE.
Every year the cell conducts fests, observes world environment day, Women entrepreneurship day and National youth day to instill in students the spirit of environment preservation, entrepreneurship and leadership. The cell has been successful in making the students understand the importance of earning while learning also.
