Talk on “St. Chavara Elias Kuriakose: the Formative Kerala Renaissance Guru”

Department of History and Political Science conducted an online talk on “St. Chavara Elias Kuriakose: the Formative Kerala Renaissance Guru” on the occasion of Kerala Piravi on 1st November 2022. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, C.M.I. (10 February 1805 – 3 January 1871) was an Indian Syro-Malabar Catholic priest, philosopher and social reformer. He initiated reforms in the Kerala society much before Narayana Guru (1853) Chattambi Swamikal(1853) and Vakkom Abdul Khadar Maulavi(1854). Though he hailed from a Syrian Christian family, which occupied a higher social status, he played a major role in educating and uplifting people especially of the lower ranks of society. The talk was given by Shiji V K, Assistant Professor in History, Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies. It was arranged for the students of Mercy College on 7PM in the Google Meet platform. The talk covered various aspects of the reforms of St. Chavara. She also introduced all books written by him. The programme was convened by Ms. Shyni E T, HOD, Department of History and Political Science, Mercy College Palakkad.
