Environment Day Celebrations – 2022

‘World environment day’ was celebrated in Mercy College on 6th June 2022. The programme was organized by PG and research Dept of Botany Mercy College in association with People’s Service Society, Palakkad (PSSP) and Kerala Social Service Forum (KSSF). We conducted various activities including seminar, distribution of saplings and also introduced a new technology – Root zone Fertigation in the College. Faculty members and two hundred students (both UG and PG) participated in this programme. Rev. Fr. Jeejo Chalackal officially inaugurated the function. Fr. Justin Kolamkanny, Executive secretary of PSSP, Fr. Jacob Mavunkal, Executive Director KSSF, Dr. Sr. Gisala George, Principal, Mercy College Palakkad, Sr. Jessina SRA, Team Leader KSSF, Dr. jelly Louis C, HOD, and other staff members of PSSP and Mercy College attended the programme. Dr. V R Haridas, the chief Guest of the Day delivered a talk on ‘Climatic Justice’ and discussed the climatic changes, its causes and various other aspects we face in the present scenario and it was really enriching. He introduced a new technology – Root Zone fertigation and its advantages. After a short break, this technology was demonstrated in the exotic garden of our College. Teachers and students skillfully attained the practical knowledge of this new method. After this, saplings of fruit trees were distributed to the students and staff and made a pledge assuring these saplings would be grown in their places thereby nurturing the nature. Dr. Renju Krishna, V, Asst. Professor, Dept of Botany proposed vote of thanks and with this, the programme came to an end at 3PM. PSSP members have brought few Dustbins for collecting the waste such as Plastic, paper, other dried materials separately and a notice board pointing the conservation strategies which was kept in different places in the college campus to make aware of the biodiversity conservation. Around two hundred students benefitted from this year’s Environment Day observation with the theme ‘ONLY ONE EARTH’ and the extension activity of PG and Research Dept of Botany, collaborating with PSSP and KSSF. world-enviornment-day-1
