INTERNATIONAL MICROBIOME DAY
Department ofBiotechnology celebrated international microbiome day on 17.09.2026. Thisday celebrates all microscopic life forms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and algae)and their immense impact on human health, industry, and ecosystems. It wasestablished by the Portuguese Society for Microbiology in 2017.
Department ofBiotechnology conducted fermented food exhibition tocreate awareness about the impact of fermented food to enhance gut microbiome.Students prepared milk-based products, fermented rice flour based steameditems, salted vegetables and fruits. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.Sr.N.M. Louly Principal, Mercy college, Palakkad
IMD aims to do more thancommemorate that early discovery. Its mission is to bring microbiology to thegeneral public, foster curiosity, and to spotlight microorganisms not just aspathogens, but as benefactors of human society and the planet—for examplethrough their roles in nutrient cycles, biotechnology, food science, medicine,and environmental processes. Events include open labs, workshops, educationaloutreach, art contests, social media campaigns, and public talks.
