TheDepartment of Social Work organized a session on ‘Gender Spectrum’ on 9thJanuary 2026. The session, led by Ms. Renila R, Community Development Expert,Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan, Local Self Government Department, Palakkad aimedto create awareness about the nuances of gender and its implications onsociety.
Ms.Renila initiated the discussion by distinguishing between gender and sex, highlightingthe differences between biological and social constructs. She emphasized theimportance of gender equality, citing its impact on individual and societal development.The speaker elaborated on various types of gender, including cisgender, transgender,non-binary, and genderqueer, promoting understanding and acceptance.
Thesession also addressed gender discrimination, its forms, and consequences. Ms. Renilashared real-life examples and case studies, illustrating the prevalence ofgender- based disparities in education, employment, and healthcare. Shestressed the need for inclusive policies and practices to ensure equalopportunities for all genders.
Theinteractive session encouraged participants to reflect on their biases and stereotypes,fostering a culture of empathy and respect. The attendees engaged actively,posing questions and sharing their perspectives on promoting gender equality. Thesession concluded with a vote of thanks, acknowledging Ms. Renila’s valuable insightsand the department’s efforts in organizing the event. The Department of Social Workplans to conduct more such sessions to promote awareness and sensitization on socialissues.
