CERTIFICATE COURSE ON “MY HOME-MY SERVICE”

DAY: 1 The first day of the certificate course started with an inaugural function which was presided by Rev. Dr. Mathew Illathuparampil, Director, St. Mary’s Polytechnic College and inaugurated by Rev Fr. Anu K O, Principal of St. Mary’s Polytechnic College. Dr. Lakshmi. M , Head of the Department of Physics, Mercy College offered felicitations. Before moving on to the training session, the instructors of the St.Mary’s Polytechnic college introduced themselves and they gave a short presentation on the topics to be covered in the course. The 30 participants were divided into three groups. The first class was on “Automobiles and their basic services”. In this session, the students got introduced to different parts of a motorcar and two-wheeler (including both the bike and scooter). They introduced the Chassis number, Engine number, mechanism of the petrol engine, brake fluid, engine oil, coolant, tyre pressure and so on. They also taught how to change a tyre and what are the features we should look for, before buying a new tyre. They gave a session about airbags and also some safety measures to be adopted in two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The afternoon session was in the mechanical lab. The major topics of this session were about : • What is an LPG cylinder? • How to properly connect an LPG cylinder? • Main parts of a gas stove. • How to service a gas stove. • Some drilling practices DAY: 2 (9.00 AM TO 4.00 PM) On the second day of the certificate course we had “Civil Engineering: Plumbing” In the forenoon the topics discussed included: • Familiarization of freshwater line fittings. • Assembling of pipe fitting. • With the help of practical sessions they gave a complete idea about ball valves, reducers, the difference between tap, hose holder and push cock, stopper, and end caps. • Repairing of pipes using: Cutting of pipe, cutting and wrapping, and coupling – both heating and coupling. • Use of M-seal and UPVC solvent. • Replacement and basic repair of taps. • Tap fitting using Teflon tape and spindle replacement. In the afternoon session, we discussed about some common complaints arise in our daily life and its solution like: • Service of toilet accessories • Flush tank leak repairing methods: Repairing of bush of inner set, replacement of washer, repairing of float screw tightening. • Service of health faucet: washer replacement and cleaning with a pin. Also discussed some basics of civil engineering like how to read a plan. Difference between service plan, location plan, site plan and unit conversions Some additional topics included, Different types of pumps, Basic building rules and how to clean a door elbow. DAY: 3 (9.00 AM TO 4.00 PM) On the third day we had “Electrical lab”. It was a nice learning experience working in the electrical lab. Various electrical & electronic instruments caught the attention of the students. • Discussed about the power supply from the KSEB and how it is stepped down for domestic supply • Difference and significance of phase wire, neutral wire, earth wire, meter box, and distribution board. • How to pass current through a fuse to an appliance. • Practical session of connecting phase and neutral wire from an outer fuse to a lamp and to glow it. • Various electronic components and instruments like: ball pin hammer, combination player, screwdrivers, tester, switch etc. • Some important information and basic repairing ideas of a fan, tube light, mixy, etc. How to change the regulator of fan was also discussed in detail. • And finally soldering and de-soldering. At the end of the day, students gave their feedback and some suggestions on topics to be included in forthcoming sessions. DAY: 4 (9.00 AM TO 4.00 PM) On the fourth day they taught about the additional topics as suggested by the student during the feed back session. The main topics covered were • A class on safety measures in road. • Mechanism of electrical motor. • Working mechanism and maintenance of AC. • Welding practices. • Safety measures of a pressure cooker. Replacement of safety valve • How to fix a bolt and lock on doors and walls • Kitchen sink cleaning methods. DAY 5 (9.00 AM TO 12.00 noon) On the final day was the exam session. Students had to do both practical and viva test. Students were divided into 3 each groups and tests were conducted individually. After the exams, students gathered in the seminar hall for the valedictory function. On behalf of St.Mary’s Polytechnic College, Principal Rev.Fr. Anu and Dr. Lakshmi M, HOD of Physics on behalf of Mercy College distributed the certificates of course completion for the students. For successfully completing 4 days training programme of “MY HOME-MY SERVICE”. The students were so happy and satisfied on completing the 5 days training programme on “MY HOME-MY SERVICE”. As a last event, they took a group photo with the Polytechnic staff and Principal.
