AISHE – All India Survey on Higher Education

The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) is a nationwide survey conducted every year by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was started in 2011 to collect detailed information about the higher education system in India.

AISHE gathers data from all institutions of higher learning, such as universities, colleges, and standalone institutions (like polytechnics and teacher training institutes). The data includes information on students, teachers, courses, infrastructure, and finances.

Goals of AISHE

The main goals of AISHE are:

  • To create a reliable database of higher education institutions in India.
  • To understand enrollment trends, including data on gender, social categories, and regions.
  • To support planning and policy-making by providing accurate and up-to-date statistics.
  • To monitor progress of higher education reforms and government schemes.
  • To identify gaps and challenges in access, equity, and quality of higher education.

Benefits of AISHE

  • Better Policy Decisions- The government uses AISHE data to design and improve education policies, schemes, and funding allocation.
  • Improves Access and Equity- By showing data on disadvantaged groups, AISHE helps in promoting inclusive education and reducing inequalities.
  • Supports Research and Planning- Researchers, planners, and institutions use AISHE data for studies, reports, and future development plans.
  • Enhances Transparency- Public availability of data increases transparency and accountability in the higher education system.
  • Tracks Growth and Performance- AISHE helps track trends in student enrollment, teacher availability, and institutional growth over time.

AISHE plays a vital role in strengthening India’s higher education system. By providing accurate and comprehensive data, it helps the government, institutions, and researchers work towards quality, accessibility, and equitable education for all.
