IMPORTANCE OF STATISTICS IN ECONOMIC

National Statistics Day observed on 29th June to create awareness amongst youth about the role of statistics in socio economic planning and policy formulation. As part of the observance, the department of economics and sociology, Mercy College Palakkad organized a talk on the importance of statistics in economics. Ms. Jeslin Kuriakose, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Mercy College Palakkad was the resource person. The session was enlightening as it opened new vistas of knowledge and made budding economist understand the intricacies related to the domain of statistics in economics. The session embarked by the blessings of the lord, Sreelakshmi delivered the prayer and brought us all to the fundamental and archetypical state of human existence. Then Akshaya welcomed Mam with her delightful speech. The center of attention of the day, the spokesperson Ms jeslin Kuriakose explained the vitality of statistics in economics in a precise and concise manner that was even comprehensible for a layman. The session began with the commemoration of the great economist P C Mahalanobis, the father of Indian statistics. Further mam discussed the applicability of statistical tools in the field of economics viz-a-viz national income accounting, demand- supply functions and computing the price level, employability and desirability for employing diverse distribution table in research methodology: X2, F- statistics, Z –statistic, t- statistics etc. The class also drew parallels as career guidance class for economics students having statistics as a core paper, as Mam deliberated on avenues in the job market for economics students who study statistics as a discipline in UG or PG courses. She also advised us all to attend those competitive exams conducted by various government agencies like Junior Statistical Officer (SSC) Statistical Assistant Grade II (PSC), Statistical Inspector (PSC) and various other exams conducted by RBI etc. Everyone in the audience enthusiastically partake in the question answer session. Lastly, Arya from Ist MA Economics felicitated and congratulated the audience for patiently listening and Mam for her valuable time, effort and contribution. On the whole, Mam garnered student’s attention and made us gain insights of the statistical tools and employability skills.
