Department of Economics and Sociology, Mercy College Palakkad in association with Institute of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Kerala participated in the State Level MODEL PARLIAMENT COMPETITION. Model Parliaments are usually held as an educational tool to promote understanding of the working of government. Model Parliaments have also been established to promote the activities of community service programmes or to advocate social or political change. The Model Youth Parliament Programme laid a bridge between youth, like-minded people working for society, and government by providing a common platform and foster for a healthy discussion on political reforms, parliamentary activities, policymaking, education, and employment. Students were much excited and were looking forward to participate in the Competition very enthusiastically. A screen test was held at the campus for the selection of participants for the competition and many students participated in the screen test and 53 students were selected from it. Almost 53 students from UG and PG Department of Economics, English and History participated in the Competition. The Competition was conducted at Mercy College on 20th December 2023. Retired joint secretary of Kerala Legislative Assembly, Shri K. Purushothaman and Retired Deputy Secretary, Balamarali Krishnan were the Judges of the competition. Relevant socio political scenarios such as New Education policy, Dowry prohibition act, increasing drug usage among students,quality health care services etc were discussed and debated by participants. Welcome speech was delivered by Dr. Deepa N, Head of department of Sociology. Principal, Dr Sr Nirmal and Dr Liji K T, Head of Department of Economics inaugurated the programme. Judges pointed out remarks after the programme. Improvement in overall presentation comparing with the last year was specially mentioned by the judging panel. They added that the real motive of conducting model parliament competition among school and college students is to create awareness among them, about the working of parliament. After the feedback Ms Thushara, Asst. Prof Department of Economics delivered vote of thanks. The programme was coordinated by Ms Thushara and Ms Ayshwarya, Asst. Proffessors of Department of Economics.
